origin: Derived from Aboriginal "kwin kwin", Kabi language? Jinjinburra dialect?, indicating red soil and thick scrub. Name officially changed to Gingin from Albany and West Albany on the 19 October 1888. In 1847 Messrs W. Foster and G. Blaxland "tookup" the Gin Gin run. It was Mr Foster who called the place Gin Gin, derived from the aboriginal name for the area Chin Chin (a scrub) or Gwin Gwin (red soil). It has also been stated that "Tirroan" was the original name, and afterwards changed by the Brown Bros. to Gin Gin after their home town in West Australia.
history: The town was first surveyed in 1880.
