origin: Gordonvale was named after John Gordon ( - ) butcher, pioneer dairyman and grazier and early director of Mulgrave Central sugarmill. Refer D. Jones. Trinity phoenix. Cairns, 1976, pp.366-67, 138-9, 261-2 and 365).
history: Originally established in 1896 as Nelson (after Sir Hugh Muir Nelson 1833- 1906, premier (1893-98) and pastoralist), Gordonvale was officially named 24 January 1914. The change of name was caused by postal confusion with Nelson in New South Wales and in Victoria.
