origin: Named after John Mackay (1839-1914), explorer, seafarer and harbourmaster, who led an 1860 expedition into the Pioneer Valley. Thomas Henry Fitzgerald designed and surveyed the township which he named Alexandra. Refer to design plan M911 and survey plan M912. The name of the Mackay River was changed to Pioneer and since the government didn't want to detract from Mackay's discovery, the name chosen for the township was Mackay. Deeds issued in October 1863 show land in Town of Mackay. Refer to J.D Kerr, Pioneer Pageant, Mackay, 1980, p.21.
