origin: Named after Marburg, in Germany, probably by one or a group of German settlers in the area in 1860s. Formerly called Sally Owens Plains and Frederick (after a local settler). Marburg was officially changed to Townshend (a British general) in June 1917, during anti-German feeling in World War I, but reverted to Marburg in 1920. Refer J.D. Kerr. Triumph of Narrow Gauge. Brisbane, 1990, p.108. Original Marburg possibly named at the suggestion of J.L. Friedrich ( - ) storekeeper.
