origin: Town name reportedly derived from Aboriginal word, Kabi language, indicating red flowering kurrajong tree, or alternatively white or red flowering ti tree. Another alternative is the tallow wood tree. Originally the settlement was known as Petries Creek. Petrie gives meaning as "tea tree bark". Refer C.C. Petrie. Tom Petire's reminiscences of early Queensland. Brisbane, 1904, p.316.
