origin: Named after Royal Navy ship named HMS Paluma. The Paluma was originally built as a gunship in 1884 but was soon after converted to a coastal survey vessel. It commenced survey work with the Royal Navy in June 1885, based in Townsville, continuing the marine survey work begun in Queensland after Separation. The Paluma continued to contribute to maritime knowledge between Cape York and the Whitsundays until 1895. It was eventually broken up and sold for scrap in the mid 1950s after working for many more years in the Port of Melbourne. The name Paluma is said to be an aboriginal word meaning thunder, though the language from which this originates has not been recorded. (Feakes, HJ, White Ensign - Southern Cross - A Story of the King's Ships of Australia's Navy, Ure Smith, Sydney, 1951, p.75).
