origin: Formerly named Mackay River by John Mackay and his party who discovered the river in 1860 and named it after Mackay's father, George Mackay of Uralla, NSW (Party member Andrew Murray's Journal). During a visit to Mackay in October 1862 by HMS Pioneer with the Governor of Queensland, Sir George Ferguson Bowen and Commodore W.F. Burnett, Commander of HM Naval Forces in Australia, on board it was decided to change the name of the river because earlier in their voyage they had named the Mackay River which flows into Rockingham Bay further north. Refer J.D. Kerr. Pioneer Pageant. Mackay, 1980, p.21.
