comments: Named by Captain William Bligh RN (1754-1817) naval officer, HMS Providence 7 September 1792.The form 'Stephens' Island' is used and underlined on Flinders' North Coast Sheet 1. Ingleton states Stephens was an Admiralty official, Sir Philip Stephens, Secretary of the Admiralty up until 1795 when he was relieved by Nepean. The form Ugar was confirmed by HMAS Shepparton, 1993 and made this comment "UGAR (whilst the Chairman stated this to be the language name he also was quite insistent that it's remaining charted as Stephens after his family was acceptable). The use of Islet for such a substantial topographic feature is also questioned."
