origin: Charted by Commander Matthew Flinders RN (1774-1814) navigator/hydrographer 6 December 1802. Probably not named by Flinders until he was detained by the French on Mauritius Island 1803-10 and working on his charts and journals. Flinders probably named the Group after Richard Colley Wellesley. Second Earl Mornington, Viscount Wellesley (1760-1842), Governor of Madras and Governor-General of Bengal 1797-1805, who attempted to secure Flinders' release from French detention. Refer G.C. Ingleton. Matthew Flinders: navigator and chartmaker. Guilford (UK), 1986, p.212. Note that Ingleton is mistaken as identifying Wellesley as the Duke of Wellington (1769-1852). Wellington was Richard Wellesley's younger brother Arthur.
