origin: The name is derived firstly from an estate developed by A.A. Blackwood ( - ) land developer, around 1917, and from the hotel built by James Freeman Cavill (1867?-1952) hotelier in the then locality of Elston. Cavill and other businessmen succeeded on 1 December 1933 in having Elston changed to Surfers Paradise. Cavill's original hotel was built in 1925. One report also credits Thor H. Jensen ( - ) surveyor, with suggesting the name on 16 October 1917 for the 71 lot estate. Prior to being known as Elston, the area was known as Umbigumbi.
history: Named as a town by Queensland Place Names Board, effective 1 December 1964.
