origin: Derived from Mount Cotton feature name, named probably by Robert Dixon (1800-58) surveyor, in 1839-40, after Major Sydney Cotton (1792-1874) soldier, Commandant Moreton Bay Penal Settlement July 1837 -May 1839. Cotton afterwards had a significant military career in India, concluding as Lieutenant-General Sir Sydney Cotton. Sydney Cotton was [one]. of twelve children of Henry Cotton of Woodcote, Oxfordshire, an uncle of the first Viscount Combermere.
