origin: Originally named Norman (QGG 8 August 1868, p.916), the name Normanton was probably jointly suggested by William Landsborough (1825-1886) explorer, pastoralist and public servant and George Phillips (1843-1921) surveyor, the latter surveying the town site during December 1867 (see plan N1481). They used the surname of Captain William Henry Norman, Victorian Naval Force, (1812-1869) who commanded both the Burke and Wills search expeditions in 1861-62 and HMCS Victoria (sloop) which convoyed the Landsborough party to the Gulf.
