origin: Named after Clarendon Stuart (1833-1912) District Surveyor, Townsville 1865-67. He carried out the first survey of the Town of Bowen in 1861 and also surveyed the first allotments in Townsville in 1865. In 1868 he worked as Gold Commissioner in Gympie. He worked in the NSW Surveyor-General's Office in 1884 and then in 1887 was a clerk/shcoolmaster at Bathurst Goal where he retired in 1892. He was also a well respected amateur artist and had several exhibitions. He died in Sydney in 1912.

Regazetted by the Minister for Natural Resources and Water on the 21 November 2008 due to the council amalgamations under the Local Government Reform Implementation Act 2007.
