origin: Town name first used 1880s, having been suggested to G. L. Pratten ( - ) surveyor by ???. Hanlon ( - ) local resident, after the seaside town in Lancashire, England. Alternate version is that the town site was named in April 1875 by Thomas Blacket Stephens (1819-1877) newspaper proprietor and politician, Secretary for Public Lands 1874-75.

Regazetted by the Minister for Natural Resources, Mines and Energy and Minister for Trade on the 27 November 2009 due to the council amalgamations under the Local Government Reform Implementation Act 2007.
