origin: Suburb name derived from railway station name, which originated as Garbutts Siding, renamed Garbutt by Railways Department 26 January 1940. The siding served the butchering firm originally associated with Charles Garbutt (1850-1905) pastoralist. Charles Garbutt died at Cassowary Creek near Herberton on 6 September 1905.
history: Suburb was bounded and named by Governor in Council 12 June 1992. Named and bounded by the Minister for Natural Resources, Mines & Energy 2 July 2004. Regazetted by the Minister for Natural Resources and Water on the 21 November 2008 due to the council amalgamations under the Local Government Reform Implementation Act 2007. Boundary between Garbutt and Rowes Bay amended 9 April 2010 vide chq022459/559.
