origin: Derived from town name which was changed from Cometville to Comet 19 March 1931 by Executive Council decision. (QGG 1931:1:1515). Original name derived from Comet River, so named by Ludwig Leichhardt (1813-1848?) naturalist and explorer, 28 December 1844, because of the sighting of a comet. Refer L. Leichhardt.
