origin: Derived from town name which was changed from Cometville to Comet 19 March 1931 by Executive Council decision. (QGG 1931:1:1515). Original name derived from Comet River, so named by Ludwig Leichhardt (1813-1848?) naturalist and explorer, 28 December 1844, because of the sighting of a comet. Refer L. Leichhardt. Journal of an overland expedition from Moreton Bay to Port Essington. London, 1847, p. 85.
history: Named and bounded as a locality in both Emerald and Peak Downs shires 16 June 2000. Regazetted as a single locality by the Minister for Natural Resources, Mines and Energy and Minister for Trade on the 13 August 2010 due to the council amalgamations under the Local Government Reform Implementation Act 2007.
