Williams, Written in sand: a history of Fraser Island, Brisbane, 1982, pp34-41).
history: First named Frazer's Island on 10 May 1842 by Henry Stuart Russell (refer: H.S. Russell, Exploring Excursions in Australia, The Journal of the Royal Geographical Society of London, vol 15, 1845, pp305-327). Russell (1818-1889), who was a pastoralist, historian and politician, popularised the use of Fraser Island as a name (refer: H.S. Russell, Genesis of Queensland, Sydney, 1888, p259). Name approved and alternative names recognised by the Minister for Finance, Natural Resources and The Arts, 1 July 2011.
