origin: Name derived from town, which is most probably a English/Aboriginal "pidgin" word which indicated horse to both groups of people. Possibly it comes from yira = teeth, implying long teeth, but its overall origin is obscure. Refer R. M. W. Dixson, W. S. Ramson and M. Thomas. Australian Aboriginal words in English. Oxford (UK), 1986, p. 86.
history: Named and bounded by the Minister for Natural Resources and Minister for Mines, 7 September 2001. Locality re-gazetted by an Amendment Notice published in the Government Gazette on the 5 April 2012 due to the council amalgamations under the Local Government Reform Implementation Act 2007.
