origin: The Gregory River was named by William Landsborough (1825-1886) explorer, 19 November 1861, after Augustus Charles Gregory (1819-1905) explorer and first Queensland Surveyor-General 1859-75. Refer W. Landsborough. Journal of Landsborough's expedition from Carpentaria in search of Burke and Wills. Melbourne, 1862, p.19.
history: The town of Gregory Downs developed around the Gregory Downs Hotel which was established in the late 1800s on the original Gregory Downs Homestead site. The homestead was moved across the Gregory River to its present site after the establishment of the hotel. Over time the name used for the town changed from Gregory Downs to Gregory. The change of name was approved by the Minister for Natural Resources and Mines on 22/03/2013. Notification of this approval was published in Place Names Decision Notice (No 08) 2013 in the Queensland Government Gazette on 12 April 2013.
