origin: There are several possible meanings for the name Millaa Millaa. One being it was derived from the Aboriginal word Malay Malay which in the language of the local Mamu people refers to the rainforest vine, 'Elaeagnus triflora', the fruit of which was a seasonal food source. There were many spelling variants including Millai-millai, Malay Malay, Milla Milla, Milay Milay. Millaa Millaa State School opened on 7 October 1918. The Post Office opened by 1919 (a receiving office had been open from 1914). Upon the railway being extended from Malanda in 1921 the Millaa Millaa Hotel was opened, and the Millaa Millaa Sawmilling Company started in 1924.

Regazetted by the Minister for Minister for Natural Resources, Mines and Energy and Minister for Trade on the 18 September 2009 due to the council amalgamations under the Local Government Reform Implementation Act 2007. Re-gazetted on the 10 January 2014 due to council de-amalgamations under the Local Government (De-amalgamation Implementation) Regulation 2013.
