origin: Derived from the Creek name, which is reportedly a perpetuation of the personal name of a prominent clan leader, known variously as Ubi Ubi, Wubi Wubi or Obi Obi. The name is also closely associated with a deep waterhole near the junction of Obi Obi Creek and the Mary River. The word probably originates in one of the Kabi language dialects. The name appears to have been recorded by Stephen Simpson (1793-1869) homeopath and Commissioner for Crown Lands, Moreton district in company with Christopher Eipper ( - ) missionary, in March 1843.
history: District named and bounded by Governor in Council 27 July 1991and redefined by Governor in Council 12 August 1994. Regazetted by the Minister for Natural Resources and Water 4 July 2008. Regazetted by the Minister for Natural Resources, Mines and Energy and Minister for Trade on the 19 November 2010 due to the council amalgamations under the Local Government Reform Implementation Act 2007. At this time the boundary between Mapleton and Obi Obi was also amended vide CHQ022459/529. Re-gazetted on the 10 January 2014 due to council de-amalgamations under the Local Government (De-amalgamation Implementation) Regulation 2013.
