origin: Derived from town name which was named after Marburg, in Germany, probably by one or a group of German settlers in the area in 1860s. Formerly called Sally Owens Plains. Marburg was officially changed to Townshend in June 1917, during anti-German feeling in World War I, but reverted to Marburg in 1920. Refer J. D. Kerr. Triumph of Narrow Gauge. Brisbane, 1990, p. 108. Original Marburg possibly named at the suggestion of J. L. Friedrich ( - ) storekeeper.
history: Named and bounded by the Minister for Natural Resources 9 July 1999. Regazetted by the Minister for Natural Resources and Water on the 29 August 2008 due to the council amalgamations under the Local Government Reform Implementation Act 2007. Boundary between Minden and Marburg amended vide CHQ022459/944 effective on 13 October 2014.
