origin: Derived from town name which was named after Marburg, in Germany, probably by one or a group of German settlers in the area in 1860s. Formerly called Sally Owens Plains. Marburg was officially changed to Townshend in June 1917, during anti-German feeling in World War I, but reverted to Marburg in 1920. Refer J. D. Kerr. Triumph of Narrow Gauge.
