origin: The locality name of Moreton Island draws its name from the island of the same name. Moreton Island was named by Lieutenant Matthew Flinders RN (1774-1814) navigator, hydrographer and scientist, HM Colonial Sloop Norfolk, 28 July 1799, taking the name from Moreton Bay named by Lieutenant James Cook RN (1728-1779) navigator, HM Bark Endeavour 1770.
