origin: Name derived from town and pastoral run name, used by W.E. Oliver ( - ) * pastoralist, in 1842. From the Waka language, Nanango is reportedly the name of the lagoon near the run homestead, two kilometres west of the present town. It was also used by Europeans to identify a clan leader, who probably owned the bunya pine trees (Araucaria bidwilli) from which nangu (bunya nut meal) was manufactured in the area. One tree in particular grew near a waterhole (called Nooganida) near the present State School. Nanango Township was originally called Goodes Inn. Refer J.G. Steele. Aboriginal pathways. Brisbane, 1983, p.275. *William Elliot Oliver.
history: Named and bounded by the Minister for Natural Resources 05/03/1999. Regazetted by the Minister for Minister for Natural Resources, Mines and Energy and Minister for Trade on the 02 February 2010 due to the council amalgamations under the Local Government Reform. The boundary between Barker Creek Flat and Nanango was amended by CHQ022459/978, effective from 16th April 2015.
