origin: Smithfield was originally the name of a township on the Barron River, named after William Smith (Bill) ( -1877) prospector, packer and track finder to the Hodgkinson Field. The township declined and was deserted by 1881. Refer D. Jones. Trinity Phoenix. Cairns, 1973, p.124-5.
history: Named and bounded as a locality by Queensland Place Names Board 1 September 1980. Boundaries amended by the Minister for Natural Resources 23 February 2001. Now includes part of former suburb of Smithfield Heights. Feature code changed from Locality (LOCB) to Suburb (SUB) by the Minister for Natural Resources and Minister for Mines 7 June 2002. Regazetted by the Minister for Natural Resources, Mines and Energy on the 24 July 2009 due to the council amalgamations under the Local Government Reform Implementation Act 2007. Re-gazetted on the 10 January 2014 due to council de-amalgamations under the Local Government (De-amalgamation Implementation) Regulation 2013. Boundary amendment between Smithfield and Trinity park effected 03/01/2017 via action #14021.
