origin: Named after John Atherton (1837-1913), grazier and overlander, who settled at Emerald End (later Mareeba) in 1875. Atherton was named by surveyor, Falconer West Hutton (1861-1933), in 1885. Hutton was issued instructions by the Queensland Surveyor-General's Office on 11 May 1885 to prepare a design for a town layout at Prior's Pocket.
history: Atherton site was formerly named Priors Pocket or Priors Creek.
