origin: Named by Francis (Frank) Lascelles Jardine (1841-1919) and Alexander Jardine (1843-1920) on 5 January 1865 after the Archer family of Gracemere, Rockhampton. Probably the same river was named Dubbelde Ree by Willem Jansz (1590?-1630?) in March 1606, later named Coen River by Jan Carstenz (1596-1640?) in April 1623, and then Peach River by Robert Logan Jack on 15 September 1879. Refer F.J. Byerley. Narrative of the overland expedition of the Messrs Jardine from Rockhampton to Cape York. Brisbane, 1867, p.43. Refer R.L. Jack. Northmost Australia. London, 1921.
